Dr. Zheng Yu is one of the representatives of many outstanding graduates of the School of Information Science and Technology, who in their respective positions, adhere to the fine tradition of “rigorous scholarship and strict requirements”, carry forward the spirit of SWJTU of “cultivate talents to rejuvenate the Chinese nation and constantly strive to become stronger”, work diligently and make good achievements frequently.

Dr. Zheng Yu is currently Vice President of JD.com Group, President of JD iCity, Chief data Scientist of JD Digits, Director of JD Intelligent City Research Institute, Visiting Professor (doctoral supervisor) of School of Information Science and Technology of SWJTU and Dean of Artificial Intelligence Research Institute of SWJTU. After 12 years of scientific research in Microsoft Research Asia Lab, Dr. Zheng Yu has led the development of “JD Digits” and “JD iCity”, making great achievements in recent years. In 2013, he was awarded as one of the Top Innovators under 35 by MIT Technology Review (MIT TR35); in 2014, he was listed as one of Top 40 Business Elites under 40 in China by Fortune; in 2016, he was rated as ACM Distinguished Scientist; in 2017, he was named as one of the “Top 10 Technological Innovators”in China’s AI Heroes List; in 2018, he was awarded the “Top Ten Influential People in China's ICT Industry” by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology; and in 2019, he was named as one of the “Top Ten Influential People in China's Smart City”.

Dr. Zheng Yu, who first put forward the concept of “Urban Computing”, is not only the founder of it, but also the leader of Spatio-temporal big data. In Google Scholar’s authoritative ranking of academic, he ranks first in both fields in the world (as of November 2020, his papers have been cited more than 31000 times, H-Index 78). The two papers published by him have been tested in the academic and applied fields for ten years, and have successively won the “10-Year Impact Award” by ACM SIGSPATIAL in 2019 and 2020, respectively. So far, Dr. Zheng Yu has also become the first scientist to win this award for two consecutive years. In 2019, he was invited to give a keynote speech at the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI 2019), the first mainland speaker invited by the organization since its inception. In the same year, he took on the national major project of “Key Technologies and Demonstrations of the Internet of Things and Smart City”, and served as chief scientist and general principal. He is also the chief designer of the digital base of the intelligent city (block data platform) in Xiongan New Area and the chief leader in charge of building the national-level modernization benchmark of city social governance in Nantong.

At present, urban computing has provided important solutions to a series of urban problems such as transportation, planning, environment, energy, commerce and public safety through big data and artificial intelligence technology. The “Urban Operating System” designed and operated by Dr. Zheng Yu has passed the acceptance test in November 2020 and has been successfully launched in Xiongan New area.

With his outstanding achievements and contributions in the fields of “Spatio-temporal Data Mining and Urban Computing”, Dr. Zheng Yu is a new IEEE Fellow in 2021, which is also the highest-ranking member of IEEE, which means the highest honor awarded by IEEE. The winner needs to make significant contributions to the progress or application of engineering science and technology, bringing great value to the community. The recipients of this honor do not exceed 1 ‰ of the total number of IEEE members in that year, and they are basically outstanding scientists who have made important achievements in the field of science, engineering and technology.

Hope that the power of example can inspire more students of the School of Information Science and Technology, and we look forward to alumni of SWJTU in various industries to create resplendence!
