The Key Laboratory of Information Coding and Transmission at Southwest Jiaotong University was established in 2006 with the sanction of Science and Technology Department of Sichuan Province in 2006. The lab focuses on four major research areas: information theory and coding technology, information transmission and wireless communication technologies, wireless networks and wireless resources management, signal and information processing.

An outstanding research team has been brought together with professor Pingzhi Fan (a winner of Outstanding Young Scientist Fund) as its academic leader. The laboratory has also attracted a group of researchers, including two winners of National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, two winners of National Top 100 Doctoral Dissertation Award, five winners of Excellent Talent Support Program of the New Century by the Ministry of Education.

The laboratory has experienced rapid growth in academic research. Till now, the laboratory has undertaken more than one hundreds research projects, among which, one from National Basic Research Project of China (973-Project), National High-Tech Project of China (863-Project), 40 plus projects on national level such as one for National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Meanwhile, over ten academic writings in Chinese and/or English are published, more than five hundred research papers appear in international and national academic periodicals, forty plus inventions are patented, five proposals for international standards have been submitted, and application products such as high-speed access systems in wireless Mesh networks have been designed.

In recent years, the laboratory has promoted extensive international cooperation and exchange programs to establish partnerships with academic institutions at home and abroad. By organizing international academic conferences, exchanging visits of scholars and students, the Laboratory has become a communication platform for international and national researchers. Ten members from the Laboratory were appointed as chairman of international academic conferences and procedural committees, twenty plus were members of international academic conferences and procedural committees, a number of them served concurrently as chairman of IEEE-CDS, chairman of VT/IT professional branches, guest editor or editorial board member of international and national academic journals.
