内容提要Outline of the Talk


The opportunities arising from the recent advances in multimedia, along with the emerging future internet-of-things (IoT) applications, such as smart cities, health monitoring devices, and driverless cars, are limited by the operational expenses (OPEX) of the base stations (BSs), as well as the finite battery capacity of the involved wireless communication devices. This calls for conscious utilization of energy and other resources, especially taking into account the trade-off among the utilized energy, bandwidth, and time. An alternative/complementary approach to reduce the OPEX and increase the networks lifetime is energy harvesting (EH), which refers to harnessing energy from the environment. Interestingly, except for harvesting energy from ambient sources, which are uncontrollable, wireless power transfer can also be used, in order to remotely charge wireless devices with low energy requirements in a wide area. However, EH creates several new challenges, with the main focus of this talk being on the development of novel scheduling and resource allocation schemes, that take into account and regulate the energy constraints imposed by the levels of harvested energy. Particularly, we will first discuss optimal resource allocation for the downlink of autonomous energy harvesting base stations, using game theory. Next, we will cover some issues on wireless powered communication networks and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. Finally, some future research directions will also be provided.

During 2013-2016 part of his work has been supported by the NPRP grant # NPRP 6-1326-2-532 from the Qatar National Research Fund (a member of Qatar Foundation). Also, during 2014-2016, he has visited the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Khalifa University, UAE, and the Institute for Digital Communications (IDC) of the Telecommunications Laboratory (LNT) at Friedrich- Alexander- Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), Germany, as a researcher assistant and guest researcher, respectively. In 2015, he received a student travel grant for the International Workshop on Optical Wireless Communication (IWOW) with Training School, Istanbul, Turkey.

He is the co-author of a book chapter on trade-offs in wireless powered communications. He is the Editor of Journal of Communications and Information Networks and the Guest Editor of Special Issue "Optical Wireless Communications". He was Member of International Advisory Committee in the International Conference on Big Data and Data Analytics (ICBDDA-17). He has served as a reviewer in various IEEE journals and conferences. He has served as member of the technical program committee of various international conferences. He was an exemplary reviewer for IEEE Communication Letters for 2014 (top 3% of reviewers).
