Abstract

It is of great interest to monitor neural activities in behaving subjects and study sensory/motor encoding from the locations distributed across the brain to understand complex processes such as intentional motor control, unintentional reflex, learning. memory and cognition. A Neural-Interface (NI) creates a link between the nervous system and outside by two-way communication, which enables exchange of information with the nervous system and could ultimately help analyze neurological function, treat patients with neurological limitation or dysfunction, even seamless human augmentation in the future.

A neural interface with distributed and implanted probes can provide incomparable site coverage, bandwidth, and accuracy.  But it also put specific challenges, especially in the hardware perspective it requires energy efficient system control and ultra-low-power circuit for signal processing. In this talk, we will be presenting the design of a low power digital baseband core with a custom protocol for wirelessly powered Micro-Neural-Interface (MNI) System on a Chip (SOC) to be implanted within the skull to record cortical neural activities. Robust CMOS Sub/Near-Threshold cell library and on-chip SRAM memory are specially designed to achieve robust low-voltage operation. Silicon implementation of such digital core in 180nm CMOS process had been taped out with measurement of average power to be as low as 2μW.


Biography

Dr. Ran Liao is with Apple in Cupertino, California since 2016. From 2014 to 2016 he was IC Design Scientist in Broadcom Office of the CTO, working on cell library and physical design methodology for high performance & low power ARM Processors and new technology nodes. Dr. Ran Liao received his B.E. degree from Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu, China, in 2008 and his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK, USA in 2013.
